The Josiah Hotchkiss House

Woodbury, Connecticut

A historical treasure, this vintage Colonial maintains much of the character of its time. Josiah Hotchkiss bought the home, sawmill and carding shop from the Judson brothers who built it and within a few years converted the sawmill into a textile mill, constructed new factories, housing for millworkers and an office building. Josiah’s brother, Gervaise, joined the business and built the home next door. The family specialized in making cashmere shawls, expanded and established a broad-cloth weaving mill. While the name of the village (Hotchkissville) was evident enough of the Hotchkisses’ wealth and local status, their influence expanded into the state legislature. At one time the house was a saltbox and the expansion is evident by the angled brick chimney in the walk-up attic and original wood posts cut off at the floor on the second level. Warm and inviting the home has four fireplaces, the original 12 over 12 windows with vintage glass, wide board floors, exposed beams and exposed brick. Living room, dining room, kitchen, library and family room are on the first level with three bedrooms and office on the second floor. Over eight acres, the sprawling property includes stonewalls and a large span of the Weekeepeemee River runs through it, supplying you with your very own swimming hole and fishing spots.
